The quaint town of Chapel Hill is the epitome of rural life in small-town America. Nestled in the very heart of Tennessee and with fewer than 2,000 inhabitants, it's a thriving little town with a big heart and a rich cultural history. It's quiet, picturesque, peaceful, friendly, and conservative; what more could you want from the place you call home, except for a larger city nearby, perhaps, like Nashville? Check. But the fact is, for such a tiny location, Chapel Hill has no shortage of opportunities or amusements, and you won't have to make the drive to Nashville to find them.
For starters, head on over to Henry Horton State Park, one of Tennessee's most spectacular recreational venues. It sprawls along the shores of the historic Duck River, and paddling is just one of several activities you can enjoy there. Its trails are simply amazing, and woven amongst them; you'll find a bit of history. The remnants of a century-old mill and bridge still punctuate the landscape and provide an irresistible allure for history buffs and nature lovers alike. The park also has an excellent golf course, a great restaurant, lodging options, and extensive campgrounds.
Dog owners won't want to skip Plentiful Hill Farm. This unusual, one-of-a-kind attraction is designed with your pet in mind. Treat your pooch to an exclusive and private off-leash romp through some breathtaking wilderness that includes well-groomed trails, open fields, and even a seasonal creek.
If you are a thrill-seeker, how about a chilling one? Chapel Hill is home to Tennessee Paranormal, where you can participate in a Ghost & Vampire tour as darkness falls. Or, if you'd like to do a little haunt hunting on your own, pay a visit to the railroad tracks that run through town and see if you can spot the Chapel Hill Ghost Light. Many people have reported seeing a mysterious, ethereal light there that moves around and sometimes comes up right behind you on the tracks. Legend says that it was the site of a fatal tragedy back in the 1940s, and the hauntings have been happening ever since. It's been known to terrify folks so much that many go running to their cars and speed away. Will you be next?
Once you've scared up an appetite and are ready for some grub, drop by Holy Smokes BBQ. It's some of the best barbeque in Tennessee, and we've heard the ribs and brisket are simply divine. You can also find some great Mexican food at Las Fiesta, or some good old-fashioned American fare at Country Diner. Lastly, finish your tour of Chapel Hill with a stop at Nash Family Creamery for some out-of-this-world ice cream that visitors have called "the best they've ever tasted." That's a mighty big boast for a small town, so take our scoop to heart and make sure you don't miss it.
