To talk about the historic town of Franklin, Tennessee, we must first tell a story. Once upon a time, in a not-so-far-away land just west of the Appalachians, there was a state called Franklin. Formed in 1784 and named after Founding Father Benjamin Franklin, it was intent on becoming the 14th state of our Union, but it was not meant to be. Although Franklin was an independent republic for over four years, South Carolina eventually absorbed it. Fast forward a few years, and the land that was once the state became the easternmost section of our 16th state, Tennessee.
Our town in Williamson County was founded a decade later by Abram Maury, Jr. and named in tribute to Benjamin Franklin. However, had that state persevered, we might be called Marthaville today. That was originally proposed as a reference to Maury's wife, Martha. She objected to that, however, and insisted that it be changed to fulfill the lost honor of the defunct state. Thank you, Martha. Franklin has a much nicer ring to it, don't you think?
The town is now a thriving, vibrant suburban city of approximately 80,000. It is rich in culture, history, and opportunity and is regarded as one of Tennessee's best places to live. The city lies just 21 miles south of Nashville, but despite its proximity to Music City, it has a booming music scene and many other wonderful entertainments.
One of Franklin's most significant historical attractions is the Lotz House Museum. This restored antebellum home sits on the site of a Civil War battlefield and offers a fascinating glimpse of life in that era. Take a tour and return to a pivotal point in one of our nation's most volatile moments. You might also want to visit Carnton Museum, a home that served as a field hospital during the war. Next, spend a few minutes at McGavock Confederate Cemetery. It's the largest private Confederate cemetery in the country and worthy of a tribute all its own. Plus, rumor has it that it's haunted.
If you love antiques and country charm, visit Leiper's Fork's picturesque community. With unique art, myriad quirky, enchanting shops, and terrific eateries, it's a great spot to spend an afternoon. Timberland Park is a lovely wildlife area and the perfect place to hike. Or, if you'd rather go for a climb, venture over to SOAR Adventure Tower. With four levels of unique climbing obstacles, it's recreational fun for the whole family.
Franklin has excellent grub, too. For the best shrimp and grits on the planet, head to the Red Pony. Or for some barbeque served up with some live music on the side, drop by Puckett's. And last but not least, to satisfy your sweet tooth, don't miss Five Daughters Bakery. These mouthwatering treats are made from scratch, and trust us when we tell you; you'll want a whole batch.
It's easy to envy the residents of Franklin. If you've carved out a life here, you know you've been doing something right. But there's something not so envious about the town, too: pest problems. They've been plaguing its townsfolk since before the Battle of Franklin. But no worries, you've got an ally on your side: Defender Pest Control. If you have a problem with pests, that's one battle we can win for you.
